Newcastle United news: Pundit drops ‘huge’ verdict after Jamal Lascelles confession

Newcastle United star Jamal Lascelles must “remain positive” after his devastating new injury blow.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Tottenham and Rangers defender Alan Hutton was adamant that it is “huge” for Lascelles, 30, to have loved ones around him to help cope with the expected “dark days” following his ACL injury.

The Magpies’ captain is reportedly set to be out for between six to nine months after he sustained the setback in Newcastle’s 4-3 win against West Ham United last month (30 March).

Lascelles recently opened up about his injury, stating that his “operation went really well” and he is “looking to get off the crutches and start work in the gym soon” while also revealing that he will do “everything [he] can to help” his teammates off the pitch.

Newcastle ace Jamal Lascelles must be “positive” after injury blow

Hutton admitted from personal experience that he understood the struggles that Lascelles is likely to face during his lengthy spell out, but claimed a strong support network is “essential”.

“I think the network you have around you is a huge thing,” he told Football Insider.

“Your family and teammates are essential.

“You’ll have some dark days and I’ve been there myself when I was out for a year and a half with a broken leg.

“It can be really difficult, especially when you see your team doing really well and playing in cup competitions, Europe and fighting for the Champions League.

“The person playing in your position is doing really well and you’re just sitting on the sidelines.

“All these thoughts are going through your head and you’re hoping you’ll be the same player when you get back.

“You need good people around you and you need your recovery to go well.

“For Lascelles, he has to remain positive.”
