Newcastle United have crushed the record for most goals scored against an opponent in the Premier League following another dominant performance against Sheffield United.

The Magpies secured the 5-1 win against Chris Wilder's side on Saturday afternoon to move within one point of Manchester United in sixth place.

Sheffield, who have now been relegated to the Championship, took an early lead through Anel Ahmedhodzic in the fifth minute - before the scoreline was quickly flipped.

Alexander Isak equalised in the 26th minute and Newcastle would pull away during the second half. The Swedish striker doubled his tally for the afternoon from the penalty spot, while Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson and an own goal from Ben Osborn made up the rest of the scoreline.

It was another tough outing against Newcastle for Sheffield fans to witness. The Blades suffered a damaging 8-0 defeat at Bramall Lane during the first meeting between the two sides back in September. Setting the tone for their disappointing season in the top flight of English football.

Speaking after the game, Eddie Howe commented on the performance where he revealed he had to give his players a stern talking to during the break. "Half-time was a big moment for us because we had to re-group," he said.

"It was a difficult first half because I thought Sheffield United played well. They are fighting for their lives. We knew they would come here and have a right go.

"It was a much improved second-half display and in the end, we fully deserved the win. We scored at a good time [in the second half] and were devastating at times."

With 13 goals scored across the two games during the 2023/24 campaign, Newcastle have smashed the record for most goals scored against an opponent in a single season. The record was previously held by Manchester City, who tallied 12 goals against Watford in total back in 2019/20

Howe's side have also equalled their best-ever goals tally in Premier League history with 74. The last time they reached this figure was the 2001/02 campaign, where Alan Shearer scored 23 goals across his 37 appearances. The squad also featured Craig Bellamy, Nolberto Solano and Jermaine Jenas.
