Alan Shearer has praised Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak following another 'fantastic' performance against Sheffield United.

Isak, 24, spearheaded the comeback victory for Eddie Howe's side against Sheffield on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies fell behind to an early goal from Anel Ahmedhodzic before the Swedish side netted a brace to fire his side ahead.

Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson and an own goal from Ben Osborn completed the 5-1 scoreline - as the Blades plummeted back into the Championship following the loss.

For Newcastle, they continue to close the gap - which now stands at just one point - on Manchester United in sixth place. An impressive achievement given the level of injuries the team have contended with throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

One reason they have been able to continue fighting for European football is the form of Isak. The Magpies striker now has 19 goals across his 23 appearances in the top flight of English football, which has been praised by one of the best players to have graced the division and club.

"It was comfortable second half, first half Sheffield should have scored at least three goals," Shearer said on Match of the Day.

"Once Newcastle got themselves into the game and this guy [Isak] got up and running. I mean, 19 in 23, his whole game is really top notch.

"Just watch how clever he is. He doesn't get the first one but he goes behind the defender to come back in, bends his run to make sure he's onside. It's a really clever finish.

"He can come deep and drop deep, asking different questions of the defender. He's got the ability to hurt you there. He is a constant threat. His finishing is excellent, penalty taking is as good as they come, confident, cool and believes in everything he is doing.

"His ability to link-up play, everything about his game is of the highest quality. He is a fantastic player."
