Bruno Guimaraes: Top source can’t believe Man City could agree late deal
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted long-term Man City target Bruno Guimaraes will be staying at Newcastle United past the 30 August deadline.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed City will look elsewhere and are likely to bring in “one or two” new faces before the cut-off.
Guimaraes has been a long-term target at Man City and is also coveted by several other elite European clubs.
However, he has been appointed captain at Newcastle in a bid to stave off any summer interest in his services.
The Brazil international had a £100million release clause in his contract at St James’ Park earlier this summer but it has now expired.
Man City set to fail in Guimaraes chase, says Wyness
Wyness insisted City will have “done their homework” on alternatives and won’t be in a bad place even if no new faces are brought in before 30 August.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think Guimaraes will be coming to City this summer.
“He’ll stay at Newcastle past the deadline.
“But Pep hasn’t exactly got a threadbare squad. They’re doing alright, to say the least.
“City are very clever. There may well be one or two to come in and they’ll have done their homework.
“There’s still time to get these deals done and we’ll see what they do.
“Even if they don’t bring anyone else in, they’re not doing too badly at all.”
