Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer interrupted Bruno Guimaraes' media duties ahead of the team's appearance on the stage on the Town Moor to congratulate him for becoming the first captain since 1969 to lift a trophy.

The pair have struck up a friendship in the last few years and regularly text each other before matches. Shearer enjoyed the love of the crowd after the victory parade but also made a clear effort to make sure the current crop of players got the credit they richly deserved.

Bruno was in the middle of saying: "I will remember this game forever. I will always remember this feeling that I felt after the game. I was very emotional. My children are Geordies so it was quite good for me."

Shearer then grabbed Bruno by the shoulder to which the skipper said: "Hey legend!" Shearer replied: "How you doing? Well done man. Enjoy the night, enjoy it."

Bruno then said: "He texts me all the time. It is a massive compliment for me but Alan is everything for this club. I said all the time that I want to put my name in the history books like Alan did. There is much work to be done."

Now Shearer, who came so close to winning something during his stint as striker and captain, feels this can be the start of a run of trophies.

The ex-skipper continued: "I bloody hope so because we've waited long enough. When you look at what happened at Chelsea and Man City, and I know PSR rules are different, but we really hope this is the start. But I have to say if we are lucky enough to go on and win another trophy it will not be as good as this."
